People who suffer from moderate or advanced periodontitis are recommended gingival flap surgery. The surgery is conducted mostly in cases where a non-surgical treatment has not cured the gum infection. Gingival flap surgery may also be done along with another procedure call osseous surgery.

How to Prepare for Gingival Flap Surgery?

The surgery is conducted by dental hygienist or periodontist who will first remove the plaque and tatar from the teeth and ensure oral hygiene. Prior to flap surgery, the patient’s general health and medication is also checked to make a smooth surgery possible.

What are the Risks Associated with Gingival Flap Surgery?

After the surgery, the patient may experience some bleeding and swelling and also a risk of infection also persists. The area of gum which has been treated is most likely to recede with time. Teeth which have been treated become vulnerable to sensitivity from hot and cold. There are also high chances of cavity in the treated teeth.

When to Seek Medical Help?

You can have some discomfort or pain and minor bleeding for 48 hours after the procedure. If the discomfort or pain persist after a few days call your dentist. Consult your dentist as soon as possible if you have bleeding or worsening of symptoms after the first three days.
