Football may help Men to Fight Obesity

According to researchers from the Glasgow University, participating in male-friendly weight management programmes can help men to lose weight.

A Scottish study that was published in The Lancet shows that football participation is one of the best ways to slim down.

weight management programmesOver 374 overweight soccer fans were called to participate in a 12-week training programme at their local football club.  Exactly a year later, these men were seen to have lost weight and had kept off about 5 kg each compared with the 374 overweight fans who were put on the waiting list for the programme.

The researchers added that the study proved that having male friendly weight loss plans helped one to stay fit. For the study, all the participants i.e. 748 men, were given healthy eating tips as well as advice on managing weight, but only about half were really invited to professional football clubs for weekly training sessions.

40 percent of the participants, along with losing weight while on the 12-week programme, maintained weight loss of at least 5 percent of their original body weight at least 12 months later. The co-author of the study, Prof Kate Hunt from Glasgow University said that managing weight and dieting are wrongly viewed as a woman’s issue, implying that a lot of men do not want to take part in the existing weight management programmes as a result of this view.
