Fibroids are benign tumours that do not pose risk for life but can lead to complications and discomforting symptoms. Learn about healthy foods that can help you reduce fibroids growth.
Fibroids are benign tumours or lumps that form in and/or around a woman’s uterus. They normally appear during the childbearing years in a woman’s life and are non-cancerous. However, symptoms can be troublesome, including heavy and painful periods, frequent urge to urinate, back pains and painful intercourse. The growth pattern of the fibroids may vary and high levels of some hormones are known to trigger growth spurt. Though foods are not known to help shrink fibroid size, but having a healthy diet can help control inflammation and those extra pounds that are known to contribute to fibroids.
Some researchers believe that uterine fibroids are more common in women with lower consumption of dairy products. Research suggests that calcium in dairy products inhibits cell growth that may lead to tumours. Incorporate low fat dairy items in your daily diet, as products high in fat will contribute to inflammation and weight gain.
Fruits and vegetables
Inflammation and extra weight contribute to fibroids. Research shows that high body mass index increases the risk of developing fibroids. Fruits and vegetables are naturally high in nutrients and low in calories, hence helping curb food cravings and reducing inflammation. Fruits and vegetables are also naturally rich in antioxidants that promote general health and help your body balance hormone levels.
Soy and flaxseeds
High levels of oestrogen are directly linked to growth of uterine fibroids. Fibroid growth is high during woman’s reproductive years, when the levels of oestrogen are at the highest and tend to reduce in size as the levels of oestrogen plummet. Foods such as soy and flaxseeds contain phytoestrogens, which are naturally occurring oestrogen like substances. Phytoestrogens block the oestrogen receptors in the cells in fibroid, inhibiting their growth. Flaxseeds are alsp rich in fiber and omega-3 fats, which have anti-inflammatory effects.
Beans and lentils
Beans and lentils are rich in fibre and have low glycemic index, therefore they are healthy for fibroids as high-glycemic carbohydrate foods can cause inflammation and increase fibroid growth. Beans and lentils are also high on nutrition and can help reduce the size of fibroid tumours.
White bread and other processed foods can increase insulin production and oestrogen metabolism, increasing the risk for fibroids. On the other hand, whole unprocessed grains can help improve uterine health and reduce fibroid growth.
