Using facebook can make you fat, says a new study.
According to a new study published in the Journal of Consumer Research, users of social networking sites such as facebook are prone to gain weight and are also likely to spend more.

The research carried out by the Columbia University and the University of Pittsburgh claimed that people who socialise with their friends on facebook are likely to have higher self-esteem but lower levels of self-control.
The study further suggested that this could be a driving force behind excessive weight gain and can also encourage the users to lead sedentary lifestyle.
This meant that people are likely to snack on unhealthy junk foods while chatting with their close friends.
“Using online social networks can have a positive effect on self-esteem and well-being. However, these increased feelings of self-worth can have a detrimental effect on behaviour.

“Because consumers care about the image they present to close friends, social network use enhances self-esteem in users who are focused on close friends while browsing their social network. This momentary increase in self-esteem leads them to display less self-control after browsing a social network,” the researchers explained in the Journal of Consumer Research.
The study also claimed that these factors are true especially for teenagers and young adults who are the heaviest users of social networks and have grown up using them.
“This is particularly true for adolescents and young adults who are the heaviest users of social networks and have grown up using social networks as a normal part of their daily lives.”
