Hypertension is defined as having a blood pressure higher than 140 over 90 mmHg, with a consensus across medical guidelines. This means the systolic reading (the pressure as the heart pumps blood around the body) is over 140 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) and/or the diastolic reading (as the heart relaxes and refills with blood) is over 90 mmHg.

 

Men are more likely to develop high blood pressure at the age of 45 while women may develop high blood pressure after the age of 65.Family history, high intake of salt and no physical activity are the contributors to hypertension. Little intake of potassium and vitamin D in diet may also cause hypertension. The manifestations of hypertension are kidney disease, eye disorder, stroke and heart failure in later stages of life.

 

Heart disease can be prevented easily if protective measures are taken in early stage. Experts suggest maintaining a healthy lifestyle including high fiber diet, regular exercise and meditation can help to combat hypertension. Early detection and proper treatment of hypertension is crucial to prevent the catastrophic results of untreated hypertension.
