Eating at Office Desk can Make you Obese

Findings of a recent study showed that people who ate their desks or canteen in office were at an increased risk of obesity and suffered from high cholesterol levels.

Office Munching Can Cause ObesityWhile leaning over the desk and staring at the computer screen, many people like to grab an odd sandwich from the drawer and start munching over it and that too with a feeling that it does not harm.

However, the researchers have a bad news coming your way if you are one of them. According to the researchers, people who have a habit of eating at their desks or in the office canteen are at higher risk of developing obesity and suffering from lower levels of vitamins and a high cholesterol level.

The findings of a new study have shown the link between health and the number of meals eaten away from home.

Lead author of the study Ashima Kant told the Sunday Times that 'we found participants who ate six or more meals a week away from home had a higher body mass index and lower concentrations of high-density lipoprotein - a molecule that removes excess cholesterol from the blood'.

'They also had lower concentrations of nutrients, including vitamins C and E, in their blood. This effect was found to be more pronounced in women and in adults over the age of 50.'

The research studied 8,314 people over duration of five years and focused on the relationship between participants’ health and number of meals eaten outside the home.

Many participants were eating fast food at restaurants. However, the study was designed to analyze beyond the traditionally unhealthy foods and people who chose `healthy’ eating options from high street cafes.

The results of the study held true for all meals eaten outside the house, irrespective of the workers making a healthy choice or not.
