dysfunctional good cholesterolHigh levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) which is considered to be the good cholesterol carries away cholesterol from blood vessels to the liver and then from there onwards the liver processes it for removal from the body.

Christian K. Roberts and his colleagues at the University of California, Los Angeles has tested whether HDL in men who weight train regularly behaved in a healthy way than compared to HDL in men who do not. This is primarily because exercise has the potential to protect against heart disease in more than one way.

The result of the study showed that men who did not exercise were more likely to have dysfunctional HDL that those who did. If you have faulty HDL then you are likely to be associated with numerous risk factors for heart disease which includes high triglycerides and a higher trunk fat mass.

The finding in the study was regardless of the subjects’ weight thereby suggesting that maintaining a healthy weight is not important for healthy cholesterol function as being active by regularly performing strength training. The study has been published in the Journal of Applied Physiology.
