Duration of Appendicitis

Appendicitis is caused due to acute inflammation of the appendix. In most cases, it presents acutely and is a common cause of emergency abdominal surgery. The symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, nausea vomiting in most people are of a few hour

Appendicitis, in most cases, has an acute presentation. In most people, the symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, nausea vomiting last for a few hours. Most people consult a doctor within 12 to 48 hours because of the severe abdominal pain. Symptoms can last for a few hours, but experts consider early treatment necessary to prevent complications from a rupture of appendix and thereby, relieve the symptoms of appendicitis.

If the patient ignores his or her symptoms or it is not diagnosed correctly, untreated cases of appendicitis may lead to gangrene of the appendix and perforation. According to some experts, the duration of symptoms exceeding 24 to 36 hours is uncommon in cases of non-perforated appendicitis. Treatment of rupture of appendix becomes complicated and will include surgery to remove the appendix, antibiotics to control the infection and intravenous fluids to keep you well hydrated.

Appendicitis is considered as an acute abdominal emergency, but in some people, the symptoms may resolve spontaneously or after treatment with antibiotics, but they may experience repeated inflammation of the appendix and pain in the right side of the abdomen. It is considered a recurrent appendicitis if the person has recurrent pain in the right quadrant of the abdomen, which was diagnosed as appendicitis and the patient was operated for removal of appendix (appendectomy).
