Sleeping through the alarm is fairly common but it can damage your productivity for the entire day. We came up with a few tips to help you with oversleeping so that your whole day doesn’t get ruined.

I do it. You do it. We all do it. Even celebrities do it. Oversleeping gives you panicked wake-ups, hurried mornings, and angry bosses. This madness has to be stopped!

Experts recommend us to sleep for around 7 to 9 hours per night. Too little sleep, of course, causes health problems; but what if we sleep more than that? Is oversleeping a real issue? Yes, it is- both physical and psychological.

From weight gain, headaches, back pain, heart diseases and even death (though rare) are all side-effects of oversleeping. The psychological side-effects are gorier. Oversleeping and missing appointments and social activities can be a real problem. The problem may be a reason for not a good start at so many things. By oversleeping, you’re wasting your time on something which is unhealthy for you; it makes you feel rubbish, and your mind gets foggy and clogged all day long.

Consider enough sleeping to be a bullseye on a dartboard. If you miss by sleeping too less, you will feel sleep deprived all day. And if you miss by sleeping too much, you will feel the same, if not worse. And it’s not surprising to know that depression is commonly linked with oversleeping. A study has shown 15% of people with depression sleep too much. Although it’s hard to say if this is a result of oversleeping or if oversleeping is just one of the symptoms. Either way, it sure doesn’t help.

So, here are tips to break your slumber and sleep just how much is enough.

Change Your Feeling about Sleep

Understand that sleep is needed to survive and function and the less amount of sleep you need to survive and function, the better.

Falling in love with sleep, which most of us do, isn’t a good idea. Yes, a nice and comfy bed is a great treasure, but you don’t want to encounter the nasty effects of this love.

Balance it right; sleep within the 7 to 9 hours range which varies from person to person and is enough for healthy well being. Anything more or less in redundant.

When you go to bed, do it with the intention of receiving just the right amount of sleep you need. When you wake up at the right time, know that your need for sleep has been fulfilled and that it’s time to wake up and start the day.

Plan your Day Correctly

When you have your day planned, you have a good reason to get up on time. And when nothing is planned “what’s the point of getting up” overpowers your intentions to wake up.

Create a task list for the following day before going to bed each day. As you take a look at it the next thing in the morning, you’ll have plenty of reasons to not snooze that alarm off.

If you have nothing to do, well that’s worse. You must find out things you can do. Start a new project, find new clubs and activities that interest you, discover what you want to do in life and find out what you can to do to achieve it.

You could simply head down to your state library and read books. They might help in discovering your purpose in life. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so allow yourself to take things one step at a time.

Optimize Your Wake up Routine

Set your alarm to go off at a time when you’ve had 7 to 9 hours of sleep; not before not after. In case, you have to wake up really early the next morning, make it a point to go to bed earlier the last night.

And as soon as you wake up, open the curtains and natural light fill your room. This will give your body a natural rhythm and motivation to stay awake and see the beautiful day coming. Early morning sunlight also stops melatonin, a hormone that makes you sleepy.

Practise optimising your wake up routine daily to the point where waking up becomes a completely automatic response to the sound of your alarm.

Have a Sleep Schedule

A regular sleep schedule makes it easier for your body to wake up and go to sleep each night. Your body has a natural sleep cycle that helps you wake up in the morning. If you wake up at different times each morning, this body clock can’t fine-tune the right time of waking you up. But, when you’ve got a good sleep schedule, you wake up full of energy in the morning.

Oversleeping can be a real problem and the effects may be worse than you might have thought. Once you’ve cured it though, as long as you stick to the changes, oversleeping will be a thing of the past.
