diet soda could reduce weightThe American Beverage Association in an attempt to clear the bad image of soda drinks have funded a study, the result of which surprisingly tells us that diet soda actually aids in weight loss.

Dr. Jim Hill who runs a weight loss program at the University of Colorado's Anschutz Health and Wellness Center helped design the study that had divided approximately 300 adults into two groups. Group one would continue to drink diet soda while the other group known as “water group” would go cold turkey.

Both these groups received intensive coaching on successful techniques for weight loss, and they also had regular feedback on the meals which they logged in their journals on a daily basis. The participants were found to be weighting just over 200 pounds during the time when the study had started.

A participant who was banned from drinking diet sodas lost about 9 pounds over a span of 12 weeks and those who were allowed to be drinking diet soda lost an average of 3 pounds during the same time period. This showed a difference of 4 pounds.
Hill said, "The results, to us, were not at all surprising."

Hill also said that in his experience people who have successfully lost significant weight are in fact the heavy users of non-caloric sweeteners.

The question that now stands is why the diet soda group turned out to be the more successful one? Cutting calories and boosting experience takes willpower for sure, and trying to simultaneously give up something that you enjoy otherwise such as a diet soda could have an effect on your ability to stay the course.

However, the study lasted only for two weeks and hence it is only a matter of time before we know whether the artificial sweeteners have any long term beneficial effect at all.
