Cyber Bullying as Bad as Physical Violence, Study

Michigan State University states that virtual bullying i.e. on the internet or by mobile phone must be kept in mind when officials create anti-bullying laws.

Cyber bullying as bad as physical violenceAccording to a new study led by a Michigan State University criminologist, children who are bullied online or mobile phone are just as likely to skip school or commit suicide as those kids who are bullied physically.

Thomas Holt, associate professor of criminal justice in the University said that one must not ignore one form of bullying for another. The study suggests that parents, officials at school and policymakers take bullying both online as well as offline when creating anti-bullying procedures and policies.

Holt added that ways to develop school policies to combat bullying within the school environment must be sought and then translated to home. The study was done using survey data of more than 3,000 third to 11th grade students in Singapore that analysed the relationship between cyber bullying, physical bullying and mobile phone bullying on children skipping school or the thought about skipping.
