The thyroid gland secretes a hormone that is responsible for your body’s metabolic rate. In hyperthyroidism, the rate of production of this hormone increases to a level that the body’s metabolic rate is at an accelerated state.

With yoga practice, the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, such as muscular weakness, increase in heartbeat, loss of weight, protruding eyes and irritability, can be brought under control. Bridge Pose

Apart from having a very calming impact on you, the Bridge pose also works your gluteal, abdominal, back and leg muscles.

  • Keep your back on the floor with your feet flat and behind your hips
  • Make sure your feet and knees are parallel
  • Raise your hips towards the roof by pressing against the floor by your feet
  • Interlock your palms together and tuck your shoulders with each other
  • Now, hold this position for seven to 10 breaths
  • Let go off your hips back on the floor gently and make your knees move sideways to relax your back

Reclining Bound Angle

  • Move from bridge pose into reclining bound angle by putting the bottoms of your feet together and releasing your knees out to each side
  • Prop the outsides of your knees with blocks if you feel uncomfortable
  • Rest your arms by your sides and imagine breathing into any muscles that feel tight
  • Hold the pose for up to one minute. Bring your knees back together gradually, to release the pose

Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breath)

Nadi Shodhana is a breathing exercise which helps to calm your mind and also regulate the functions of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Steps given below explain its procedure:

  • Sit straight in either sukhasana, i.e. cross-legged, or on a stool, keeping the back straight
  • Fold the middle and index fingers of your right hand downwards
  • Use the right thumb to close your right nostril
  • Breathe in through the left nostril
  • Close your left nostril with your ring finger
  • Now, let go off the thumb and exhale through right nostril
  • Inhale through right nostril and immediately close it with your right thumb
  • Release your ring finger and breathe out through the left nostril
  • Repeat these steps for 10 rounds.
