Creative people and mental illness

Risk of developing bipolar disorder or schizophrenia has been seen to be very high in artistic people.  For the medical fraternity, it has always been tough to define what creativity really is. The best they could come up with was this: A creative person is someone who takes novel approaches that demand cognitive processes very different from the prevailing modes of expression or thought.

Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are thought and emotion disorders. This means that they affect those who show alternations in their cognitive as well as emotional processing.

When the research was being done, the scientists were able to find higher genetic risk scores for bipolar disorder as well as schizophrenia in creative people. These scores were found to be almost half way between general population as well as those who suffered from the disorder themselves.
This research has been published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
