According to a new study, consumption of high fat dairy foods such as cheese, yoghurt and eggs has been linked to a reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes.
A recent study conducted by researchers from Finland and Sweden has found that a diet that has high-fat dairy products can cut the chances of developing type 2 diabetes by25 percent. The researchers also added those people who consume at least four eggs per week stand the change of dramatically reducing their diabetes risk by 37 percent compared with those who eat only one egg over the same period of time.
The research comes as a contradiction of the long-held notion that fatty dairy foods are unhealthy because of their impact on cholesterol levels. Diabetes tends to affect one in 25 people with type 2 diabetes accounting for around 87 percent of all the cases.
For the study, scientists at the Lund University in Sweden looking at the importance of fat in food instead of the amount that is eaten and further examined the variety of sources of saturated fat. Both dairy as well as meat product tend to have saturated fat, though some saturated fatty acids are found commonly in dairy products.
Findings of this study have been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The researchers looked at the eating habits of 27000 people aged 45 to 74 in a Malmo diet and cancer study from the early 1990s.
Dr Ulrika Ericson, the author of the report, said, “Our results suggest that we should not focus solely on fat, but rather consider what foods we eat. Many foodstuffs contain different components that are harmful or beneficial to health, and it is the overall balance that is important.”
