However hard we strive to eat good food and use natural cleaners, we often overlook the fact that we live in a world full of chemicals, pesticides, and other harmful substances.
With more and more Indian cities making it to the list of world’s most polluted cities, there is a high chance that you are perhaps living in the city with a lot of pollution or somewhere nearby. Even if you are not, the cumulative effects of years of breathing furniture polish or having floor cleaner on your skin isn’t healthy.
Heading for the hills or building your own log cabin in the woods is not a feasible option, so it’s important to find other ways to cope. Now, our bodies were made with a natural detoxifying system but our homes weren’t. It’s upon us to keep a heart-friendly and earth-friendly abode, let’s just do that with some simple steps to detox our home.
Switch to nontoxic cleaning products
Some cleaning products may contain chemicals that are toxic and dangerous for human health. But, there have been many breakthroughs, making available some eco-friendly, and human health-friendly cleaning products. These products may just need water or elbow grease to clean well. When buying a home cleaner, look for a bio-degradable and non-toxic option. Also, prefer hydrogen peroxide over bleach; it’s a subdued alternative.
You can make your own, such as this simple multipurpose soft-scrub: Mix about 1/2 cup baking soda in a bowl with enough natural liquid soap or detergent to make a texture like frosting. Scoop onto a sponge and clean the bathtub or tiles. Rinse. It’s so versatile and so simple.
Avoid dry cleaning clothes
Dry cleaning uses perchlorethelyne, which is a recognised carcinogen. Learn to hand wash everything. But, if you have to dry clean something absolutely, don’t bring those clothes in your bedroom or closet directly; air them out in an outdoor area first.
Similarly, ditch using mothballs to prevent your clothes from insects. Use cedar chips, blocks, balls and hangers or sachets made with herbs like mint, rosemary, thyme or cloves instead to repel moths without harmful chemicals.
Choose organic foods
According to a study published in the Journal of Applied Nutrition, on a per-weight basis, average levels of essential minerals were much higher in the organically grown than in the conventionally grown food. The organically grown food averaged 63% higher in calcium, 78% higher in chromium, 73% higher in iron, 118% higher in magnesium, 178% higher in molybdenum, 91% higher in phosphorus, 125% higher in potassium and 60% higher in zinc. Do we need to say more about the benefits of eating organic foods?
Similarly, foods with higher number of additives when washed, cause the chemicals used on crops to end up in runoff water which then goes into your groundwater and oceans. This, just not pose health risks but also environmental dangers.
Say no to products with synthetic fragrances
A single fragrance contains as many as 300 chemical ingredients. Imagine how many chemicals your artificially fragranced cleaner must contain! Instead, choose a fragrance free cleaner or one made with essential oils. Making this simple choice helps protect your health and your family’s health, and it’s more sensitive to other people —according to the FDA, fragrances are responsible for 30 percent of all allergic reactions.
Discard the pesticides
Pesticides are toxic, causing great harm to your health. Throw them away for you don’t need them. Use other effective alternatives to pesticides such as soap-based solutions that serve as all-purpose pesticides. These are nontoxic to environment along with working on a wide variety of garden insects by disrupting their cell membranes and causing dehydration.
To make your own soap-based solution, mix 1 to 2 tablespoons liquid soap, (do NOT use detergent) into 1 quart water in a bucket, and then transfer to a spray bottle for use. Be careful about not using too much soap or you will end up killing your dear plant.
You may not always be able to see and smell potentially harmful and toxic substances lurking in your home, but it is important to take action now to get rid of the bad and bring in the good.
