A study published in the British Journal of Cancer claims that a simple breath test may help diagnose stomach cancer early.

Breath Test May Help Spot Stomach CancerA quick breath test to diagnose stomach cancer could soon become a reality. The breakthrough promises to revolutionise the entire process of stomach cancer screening and treatment. The study was published in the British Journal of Cancer.

The Chinese study assessed how an analysis of the organic compounds in a person’s breath can be used to diagnose cancer. They examined breath of people with stomach complaints; some had confirmed stomach cancer while others had confirmed non-cancerous conditions such as stomach ulcers. The test was accurate up to 90% to identify who did and who did not have stomach cancer.

At present, only way to identify cancer is endoscopy, in which a tube is placed down the throat and into the stomach. The invasive endoscopy is not only time-consuming but is expensive as well.
