Colitis: Colon inflammation which is caused due to inflammatory bowel disease or infections in the colon.

Treatment Options for Blood in Stool

After the correct diagnosis, the doctor may suggest the following treatments.

If there is no serious problem, the bleeding can be controlled by medications. This involves addressing the root cause of bleeding so that it doesn’t return. Most commonly, antibiotic medications for bacterial infection(caused by H. Pylori) are prescribed. If the problem is caused due to colitis or colon infection, anti-inflammatory drugs are given.

  • If bleeding is happening due to damage in the colon, the doctor may conduct surgery to remove the part and stop bleeding.
  • Another technique used to stop acute bleeding is endoscopy where chemicals are injected on the bleeding part and then later closed with laser surgery.
  • In case endoscopy doesn’t help, the doctor may conduct angiography to inject the chemicals directly into the blood vessels to stop bleeding.
