Blood Group may be Responsible for Memory Loss

Your blood group may put you at an increased risk of developing thinking and memory problems. People with blood type AB suffer cognitive impairment more than others with a different blood type.

Surprising things can affect your memory, one of them being your blood group. If you blood group is AB, you are at an increased risk of developing memory loss.
AB is a rare blood group, found in only 4% of the population is the US has been linked with an 82 percent more chances of developing memory issues as compared to people with other blood types.

A US team led by Dr Mary Cushman, of the University Of Vermont College Of Medicine, Burlington examined 30,000 people aged 45 and above for over three years and identified 495 participants to had developed thinking and memory problems, or cognitive impairment. The comparison was against 587 people who had no cognitive problem.

Out of all the people with cognitive problems, 6% were AB blood type while the other 4% general population had a blood group other than AB.

Memory Loss

“Our study looks at blood type and risk of cognitive impairment, but several studies have shown that factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes increase the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia,” said study author Mary Cushman.

There has been previous research showing how blood type may influence heart and stroke risk.

“Blood type is also related to other vascular conditions like stroke, so the findings highlight the connections between vascular issues and brain health,” Cushman said. “More research is needed to confirm these results.

Lifestyle is a crucial element that can help you avoid this memory degradation. A balanced diet, regular exercise and not smoking are your best options. This study was published in the journal Neurology.
