Red meat is considered to be unhealthy by most, fitness gurus avoid it, and people generally look at it in a bad light due to health reasons. A new study has now sidelined such claims and have proved how red meat can in fact be good for your heart
Red meat has for centuries been in the dark slate, especially for fitness freaks. A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has given surprising evidence to the positive effects of red meat to one’s health. The study revealed that eating beef everyday improves cholesterol levels
The study was done by involving participants who followed a DASH or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet. The diet encouraged low-fat dairy, lean meats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains along with the consumption of 4 to 5.4 ounces of lean beef per day instead of fish or chicken. When the participants consumed the aforementioned diet, their levels of harmful LDL cholesterol decreased by 10 percent.
The researchers point out that earlier studies that found that red meat increased heart disease risk had a big flaw: they included processed meats such as hot dogs, spam, sausages etc in the category of red meat, which the nutritionist Michael Roussell said are completely different from lean beef in terms of nutrition. Russell also found in his study that consuming a healthy diet along with lean beef reduced levels of triglyceride inside the HDL cholesterol particles. This, he said, is important because it not only enhances the function of one’s good HDL cholesterol but also improves their anti-inflammation function that helps to fight diseases.
Roussell believes that the steric acid in the beef may be a contributing factor to the favourable changes in the HDL cholesterol. Furthermore, almost half of the fat that exists in the beef is oleic acid, which is also a heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. He said that beef is an assortment of heart-healthy and unique fats that one may not get from other food items.
