Music is often linked to increased creativity. It is commonly linked that when you listen to background music while performing a task, it can increase your creativity. But according to a recent study, listening to background music significantly, reduces the creativity and affects a person's ability to complete tasks and verbal creativity. This study has challenged the popular myth that music enhances the creativity of a person.
The research was conducted by psychologists from the University of Gavle in Sweden, University of Central Lancashire and Lancaster University in the UK. During the study, the psychologists examined the impact of background music on the performance of a person.
It was found that background music while performing a task significantly impairs a person's ability to complete tasks testing verbal creativity.
The researchers used three methods to complete the study and created three different environments.- one with a quiet environment, secound with background music with unfamiliar lyrics and third included only instrumental sounds.
“We found strong evidence of impaired performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,” said Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University.
The research busted the common myth that music enhances the creativity of a person while performing a task.
