For the very first time, medical expert panel in the US have cured a child born with HIV infection.
At a scientific conference in Atlanta, doctors have claimed to have cured a baby born with the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, the precursor to AIDS. The baby born with the AIDS virus two years ago in Mississippi was put on antiretroviral therapy within hours of birth. The baby was treated with life-extending combination of drugs known as ‘triple therapy’.

Doctors are calling it a functional cure but are still uncertain whether this child actually has been cured or not. It is not yet certain that the cure is complete or only partial but has promised treatment for the more than 300,000 babies born with the infection around the world each year.

The researchers of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases called it a hypothesis-generating case, which will give them substance to study the phenomenon.
