We are very much familiar with the word Thyroid, which is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland in the neck above the collarbone. This hormone regulates various actions in the body that comprises calories burn and heartbeats. The thyroid gland has much to do with a female reproductive system, mostly if the thyroid is intense may have various effects including puberty and early or late menstruation. Unusually increase or decrease of this hormone may result in less or more menstrual periods, regular or irregular menstrual periods and amenorrhea.

Do you know that thyroid could be controlled through Ayurveda practices? Ayurveda says thyroid is located in the Majjadhatu and its function is controlled by Pitta dosha, which is accountable to all of the metabolic actions accepted by the thyroid gland.

According to Ayurveda, Panchakarma including Vaman (waste products or toxins are eliminated from the body), Virechan (purification therapy), Udvartanam (special tissue massage), head massage and many more are beneficial for such cases. One more unbelievable Ayurvedic practise Avagaha Swedan is helpful in such a situation. A balanced a diet comprising all the essential nutrients such as iron, calcium, vitamin D, zinc, and others, can be derived only from the fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc., and not from the junk or over-cooked food.

Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand Pose) is one of the most appropriate and effective yogasan for the right functioning of the thyroid gland. Also, Surya Namaskar, Pavamuktasana, Kapal Bhati, Awlom Vilom is the other beneficial yogasan that should be practised regularly.

Do’s for thyroid patients

  • Check your thyroid levels regularly
  • Drinking 4 to 5 litres water regularly is must for thyroid patients, as it allows the thyroid to function properly as well as make sure the cleaning the liver and toxins of kidneys
  • Antioxidants-rich food
  • Food rich in Vitamin B is essential for the patients having abnormal thyroid level
  • Vitamin D is a must for such patients
  • Green leafy vegetables are necessary for thyroid patients

Don’t for thyroid patients

  • Say no to cigarettes and alcohol because alcohol is a sedative, and it overpowers the thyroid gland functions. Cigarettes chunk the iodide portion
  • No macronutrients including carbohydrates, fats and protein
  • No sugar and coffee
  • No self-medication
