Most of the common essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus are prepared by distillation. The raw plant material that includes the flowers leaves, wood, the bark, peels and seeds are put into a distillation apparatus over water. As the water is heated, steam passes through the plant materials. This vaporises the volatile content in the plant materials which pass through a condensing coil transforming them to a liquid state. This condensate is collected in a receiving vessel. The condensate is variously referred to as a hydrosol, herbal distillate, plant water essence andis increasingly used in cosmetic preparations and aroma therapic preparations.
