According to the World Health Organisation report on global antibiotic resistance, the disease we had thought have long gone could come back. The diseases that were treatable in the past, such as gonorrhoea and tuberculosis, are often fatal now.
Antibiotic resistance occurs when microbes stop responding to antibiotic drugs or chemicals. It is growing remarkably. Here are the diseases/infections that could come back.
Tuberculosis, a potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects your lungs, is treatable once prescribed a course of drugs. Resistance has developed against wide range of drugs that are used to treat the disease. This has led to the occurrence of multi-drug-resistant TB, which results from taking TB drugs.

Gonorrhoea is thought of as an easily treatable disease and falls into nothing-much-to-fear category but the antibiotics that are used to treat it have become less effective. The bacteria behind the disease have developed such high levels of resistance. With drugs losing their effectiveness, this sexually transmitted infection (STI) could run through populations.
After getting a vaccination against typhoid, people believe it’s not a disease to be feared. But, the illness still affects tens of millions each year in the developing nations. Typhoid fever is treated with antibiotics, but increased resistance to them is a cause of concern. The multi-drug-resistance has further complicated the treatment of infections.
Klebsiella bacterium is the reason behind a wide range of conditions including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, septicaemia, meningitis and diarrhoea. The WHO report highlighted that bacteria are causing more and more problems owing to their ability to avoid the effects of antibiotics used against them.
So far, there is no resistance to sexually transmitted diseases and public awareness has reduced the spread substantially; but it is feared that there still is potential for fatal consequences. The sexually transmitted infection can be treated with a single injection of penicillin. But, the resistance to this antibiotic has developed in form of other diseases.

What can be done about it?
Antibiotic resistance has become a global problem and awareness is the way we can help to reduce it. Practicing good hand hygiene, especially when visiting hospitals, is the foremost.
The preventive measures that can help avoid antibiotic resistant microbes are as follows.
- Practice good hygiene. Always wash your hands and use hand sanitizer.
- Take nasal decongestants, cough suppressants and antihistamines for cold or flu symptoms.
- Complete the course of antibiotics, as prescribed by your doctor.
- If you have an illness, discuss with your doctor how to get treated.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue whenever you sneeze or cough.
- If you feel sick, stay at home and get some rest.
Besides, you need to take antibiotics when prescribed by a doctor, complete a full course of medications and eat healthful foods. These are some small things but they safeguard you from the diseases.
