Alkaline water and its usefulness is very controversial. While some people believe that alkaline water is better than normal drinking water, some people favor regular water over alkaline water. The basic difference between normal and alkaline water is the pH level. Alkaline water is comparatively less acidic than normal drinking water. While the pH of normal water is 7, alkaline water has a pH of 8 or 9. The word ‘alkaline’ describes the slightly basic nature of this water. This may mean that it can neutralize the acids in your body thereby regulating the body’s pH level. It supposedly contains a lot of alkalizing compounds like Potassium, Silica, Calcium, Magnesium and bicarbonate.

Those in favor of alkaline water say replacing regular drinking water with alkaline water can prevent & treat several health complications along with slowing down the aging process. It increases the rate of nutrient absorption in the body which thus, boosts metabolism.

Alkaline water also has some healthful alkaline nutrients and negative oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). Here, ORP is water’s ability of water to act an antioxidant or a pro. The lesser or negative the value of ORP is, the greater would be its antioxidizing property.

Though there is not much evidence about the health benefits of alkaline water, here are some of the good things that people say about alkaline water. Upon drinking alkaline water in the place of regular drinking water, it may help with:

  • Weight loss
  • Digestion
  • Detoxification of the stomach
  • Improved immunity
  • Healthy glow on the skin
  • Anti-aging
  • Prevention from chronic illnesses like cancer

No. Despite all the good things said about this basic water, there are some downsides of drinking alkaline water daily. While it is not necessary that everybody would experience these but a lot of people have reported certain complications after the consumption of alkaline water over a period of days. These include:

Lowering the acidic levels in the stomach: Sometimes, in order to regularize the pH levels in the body, alkaline water reduces the acids in the stomach which helps kill the pathogens and bacteria in the stomach.

Gastrointestinal issues: Excess alkalinity in the body may agitate the digestive ability of the stomach which leads to stomach-related health problems such as upset stomach, gas, acidity, etc.

Other issues: Vomiting, nausea, tingling sensation, muscle twitching, hand tremors, etc.

The Bottom Line
