The acid that is so popularly used in cleaning the toilet can be detrimental to one’s lungs. Almost 91 percent of doctors link acids used in cleaning toilets with respiratory as well as other health problems. Dr Preetiash Kaul, senior consultatnt, Indian Medical Academy, said that long-term exposure to acid fumes, even for a short period of time could lead to serious respiratory problems such as bronchitis and asthma, nasal ulceration, pulmonary edema and other complications like kidney damage, bluish colouration of lips and fingernails, etc.
For the study, a survey of 2,250 families was done across Chandigarh, Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Jaipur. The two-fold study that was conducted amongst consumers at one end and doctors on the other revealed striking facts around the usage of toilet cleaners. Around 91 percent of doctors said that those people who use acids as toilet cleaners face some or other immediate health hazards in the form of breathlessness, eye irritation and coughing. About 51 percent of the respondents said that they experience breathlessness while 31 percent said that their eyes get watery. 18 percent of the respondents said that they felt some sort of skin irritation and 23 percent experienced a burning sensation while the other 8 percent suffered from other problems.
Dr Jalil Parker, chest physician at Lilavati hospital said, “These acids used for cleaning toilet and tiles generate fume which when inhaled interact with the cilia of the nasal mucousa. It kills the mucuous lining of the pharynx, trachea. The fumes are irritant and corrosive in nature and repetitive inhalation of these fumes can give rise to chemical pneumonia. The prolonged inhalation can lead to loss in the sponginess of the lungs. Loss of sponginess in the lung is an irreversible process and can lead to an ailment called restricted airway disease.
