Oral surgery is a recognized international specialist training course in dentistry. Oral surgery includes the diagnosis, surgical and related treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving the functional as well as the aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the head, mouth, teeth, gums and jaws.

The following conditions may require oral surgery:

Impacted Teeth

Sometimes wisdom teeth emerge from the gum line and the saw is not large enough to allow room for them which causes problems. Often one or more of these third molars fail to emerge in proper alignment or fail to fully emerge through the gum line and become entrapped or “impacted” between the jawbone and the gums.

Tooth Loss

Dental implants are done if tooth loss occurs due to an accident or infection or as an alternative to dentures. The implants are tooth root substitutes which are surgically made to anchor in place in the jawbone and stabilize the artificial teeth to which they are attached.

Jaw-Related Problems

Unequal jaw growth: Sometimes the upper and lower jaw fails to grow properly resulting in difficulty in speaking, eating, swallowing, and breathing. Some of these problems -- like improper teeth alignment -- can be corrected with braces and other orthodontic appliances. But some serious problems require surgery to move all or part of the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both into a new position that is more balanced, functional, and healthy.

Improve fit of dentures: For first-time denture wearers, oral surgery can be done to correct any irregularities of the jaws before creating the dentures for a better fit.
