According to a study, drinking a glass of beetroot juice regularly can reduce risk of heart-attack.
Beetroot contains dietary nitrate that dilates your blood vessels and decreases your blood pressure, which is one the leading causes of heart attack.
As per the findings of the study, published in the Journal of Physiology- Heart and Circulatory Physiology, dietary nitrate can reduce the over stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system that heart disease and causes the heart to beat faster.
The study found that beetroot juice can ease muscle sympathetic outflow at rest and during exercise. For this study, the researchers investigated 20 young volunteers with the average age of 27 who were given nitrate supplement or a placebo.
The researchers recorded blood pressure, heart attack and muscle sympathetic nerve activity of the participants at rest and during hand grip exercise with their non-dominant hand.
The outcome showed that MSNA was lower when the participants drank beetroot juice compared to when they drink the placebo. But, no differences in blood pressure were detected either at rest or during the exercise.
