Symptoms and treatment of hypertension stage 1

Sep 19, 2017

Quick Bites:
  • Stage I hypertension patients have systolic pressure ranging from 140 to 159mm Hg.
  • High blood pressure can be fatal as it leads to heart failure eventually.
  • Medications like water pills and calcium channel blockers can treat high BP.

In a lay man’s language, blood pressure refers to the force or speed of blood pushing against the blood vessel walls. The heart performs the function of pumping the blood to the arteries from where it is transported to different parts of the body.

High blood pressure also known as hypertension can be highly dangerous for the body as it causes stress on the heart and makes it work harder to pump the blood. This leads to hardening of the arteries and eventually leads to the heart failure.

What is normal blood pressure?

To read the blood pressure accurately there is a top number called systolic and a bottom number known as diastolic. The ranges of blood pressure are:

  • Normal: Less than 120 over 80 (120/80).
  • Prehypertension: 120-139 over 80-89.
  • Stage 1 high blood pressure: 140-159 over 90-99
  • Stage 2 high blood pressure: 160 and above over 100 and above
  • High blood pressure in people over age 60: 150 and above over 90 and above

Stage 1 hypertension

Hypertension can be sub-classified into stages: stage I, stage II, and isolated systolic hypertension.
If you have hypertension stage I you have systolic pressure ranging from 140 to 159 mm Hg or a diastolic pressure ranging from 90 to 99 mm Hg.
When your blood pressure falls in this range, you must know for sure that you are suffering from

Treatment for stage I hypertension

When your hypertension is at stage I, the best possible treatment for you is to have a healthy lifestyle. The range of your blood pressure will reduce dramatically when you introduce healthy habits into your routine.

Apart from this, you must also consult your doctor and the following medication can be taken to fight hypertension.

Diuretics (water pills): When your consult your doctor, he may give you diuretics, which are also known as water pills, in order to throw out the excess water and sodium in the body. This will lower your blood pressure and you can then maintain the lowered levels by simply maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors: this helps the blood vessels to widen and prevents the formation of a hormone called angiotensin.
Angiotensin II receptor blockers: the blood pressure is lowered with this medication as it blocks certain nerve and hormonal signals to the heart and blood vessels.
Calcium channel blockers: this lowers the blood pressure by preventing calcium from going into the heart and blood vessel cells. This in turn lowers the blood pressure.

There are many treatments available for lowering stage I hypertension. But, it is always recommended to make changes in your lifestyle to maintain a healthy pressure of blood in the body.
