In prenatal care program, Dr. Asha Sharma, gynaecologist, says that a prospective mother is checked for signs of any underlying disease. Her blood test, urine test, weight and diet is analysed to prevent probable pregnancy complications. The doctors also undertake tests to check the foetus for birth defects. After three months of pregnancy, foetus heartbeat is listened and foetus’s size and position in the uterus is checked. Prenatal care tests are important to detect the maternal problems and health risks of an unborn baby beforehand. No knowledge or late detection of complications such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure and insignificant weight gain can be equally harmful for the mother and her unborn baby.
