Constant wear and tear of the knee joint is one of the primary reasons for knee pain. It may occur in older adults, young adults and children. However, women are found to be more vulnerable to knee pain as compared to men. The exact location of the knee pain may vary from person to person. Pain can originate in any of the bony structures from femur, tibia and fibula, kneecap to ligaments and cartilage. Apart from the wear and tear due to ageing, other factors that may lead to knee pain include fractures, ligament injuries, meniscus injuries, dislocation of the knee joint and stiffness in the joint due to arthritis, lupus and other chronic ailments.
