Anabolic steroids are synthetic substances that hold similarity to the male hormone testosterone. They are usually prescribed by the doctors to treat problems related to delayed puberty and other medical problems that reduce the production of testosterone. We all know steroids are used to make muscles bigger and bones stronger. But what you may not know is that use of these steroids may cause puberty to start and can help some boys suffering from genetic disorder to grow more normally. These steroids can be taken in the form of pill, as a shot into a muscle or be rubbed as a gel or cream on your skin. It is significant to note that such steroids must only be taken on prescription as intake of steroids in large amounts can cause side effects. However, it has been observed that some adults and teens use these steroids without prescription to tone the body, gain muscle mass and increase strength. Major side effects of anabolic steroids in men include reduction in sperm count, shrinkage of testicles and enlarged breasts. Side effects in females could be increased body hair, rough skin, decreased breast size, enlarged clitoris, and making voice deeper. Some common side effects of anabolic steroids in both men and women include: high blood pressure, heart attack, or stroke, higher levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and lower levels of good cholesterol (HDL), liver disease and possibly liver cancer. The likelihood of these problems is higher when steroids are taken in form of pill. They can also result in oily skin, acne, and male-pattern hair loss. The best practice is to consult a doctor. Even when your instructor is a certified one, there is no harm in consulting a medical practitioner. He will ask you about your fitness activities and dietary supplements and other substances that you use. He will then conduct a physical exam and may ask you for your urine sample and blood test.
