Chronic heartburn can have adverse affect on your life. From letting go off your favourite foods to sleepless nights, heartburn can drastically interfere with your normal routine. Being diagnosed with GERD, hiatal hernia or peptic ulcer is already so damaging for the body that you do not want your lifestyle or dietary habits to add to your miseries. To minimize the agony, here are few things that you must stop doing if you suffer from heartburn.
When you stuff your stomach with food in larger quantities than what you can handle, there is an upward pressure exerted against the lower esophageal sphincter, causing heartburn. So, avoid overeating to prevent heartburn.
Eating too fast interferes with normal functioning of the digestive system, and poor digestion can increase your chances of experiencing heartburn.
There are two reasons why some foods can easily trigger heartburn. First, the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes when it should not and second, the stomach produces acid in large quantities. Some foods that can cause heartburn include black pepper, citrus fruits, onions, etc.
Going to bed too soon after eating can press the contents of your stomach harder against the esophageal sphincter, triggering acid reflux. Eat at least 2-3 hours before hitting the bed.
When you lie flat on the bed without a pillow under your head, the stomach’s contents get pressed against esophageal sphincter, triggering heartburn. But, if you have your head elevated higher than your stomach, gravity will reduce the pressure.
Smoking and heartburn don’t go hand-in-hand. While you can’t let go of suffering from heartburn, consider quitting. Smoking can trigger many severe health conditions, and heartburn is one of them.
The more alcohol you drink, the more acid will be produced in your stomach, leading to a relaxed esophageal sphincter. Limit your alcohol intake to few festive occasions to prevent heartburns.
