Using hands to eat food is an integral part of Indian culture. However, in the process of aping the West, many people now prefer using spoons and forks to eat. But did you know besides keeping you close to your culture, eating with hands has numerous health benefits associated with it?
Ayurveda believes that all humans are made of five pranas, a.k.a., life energies and these pranas correspond to each finger. While your thumb indicates fa ire, the index finger and middle finger indicates air and sky respectively. Similarly, ring finger corresponds to earth and the little finger indicates water. If at all an imbalance takes place in any of these elements, it can be a cause for serious ailments.
When you touch food with your hands, the brain signals to the stomach that the body is about to receive food. This prepares the stomach for digestion of food, leading to a better digestive process.
Mindful eating is a process in which you need to watch out for everything that goes into your belly. When you eat with your hands, it promotes attentiveness towards eating. You often need to focus and look at the food before putting it into your mouth. Mindful eating plays a significant role in promoting good health. It improves absorption of nutrients from food, boosts digestion and eventually leads to a fit body.
Touching food with hands acts as a temperature sensor. If the temperature creates discomfort to your hand, you are very less likely to put the food in your mouth. Hence, it prevents your tongue from the irritating burnt spots.
